Progress and Purpose: Thomas More’s Utopia

Thomas More’s short but influential Utopia takes the reader on a journey to another world: literally, “No Place,” but equally evocative of its Greek homophone, “Good Place.” A renowned humanist in his day, now recognized as a Catholic saint, Thomas More gives his readers the critical distance to reflect on their own societal failures and shortcomings, raising questions about the nature of virtue and freedom, the ethics of property, and the purpose and limits of punishment. This will be a three part seminar with Socratic discussions over dinner as we explore this classic text.
