About
Do you love singing Gregorian chant, but are shaky on the meaning of what you are singing? Have you studied Latin, but only as a dead language in a book? "Latin for Chant" approaches the Latin language from the unique perspective of liturgical song. In these monthly classes, we will read, translate, sing, and interpret some of the most beautiful Latin words of the Mass and Divine Office. Sessions will combine historical contextualization and theological exegesis with close readings and translations of the Latin chant texts and appreciation for their musical and poetic features. Readings and notes will be distributed in advance. Zoom link provided upon registration.
The translation portion of the class presupposes that you have completed (and have some recollection of) one year of Latin study or the equivalent. However, anyone may register as an auditor for this course to learn about these chants and sing along.
